Frequently Asked Questions

Lip & Dermal Fillers: FAQ's

What are Lip fillers?

Lip fillers are a type of dermal filler, used to fill and plump the lips for a more pronounced appearance. The filler is a soft, mouldable gel made from a compound that occurs naturally in the skin’s barrier.

What happens during the procedure?

First, a doctor will consult with you to discuss your concerns, your desired outcomes, and answer any questions you may have.

The filler will then be injected into the lips with a thin needle. You will be asked to return for a complimentary follow-up review and massage to ensure the filler takes proper shape.

What do lip fillers do?

Lip fillers add immediate volume to the lips for a plumper appearance. They’re also made from a naturally-occurring compound that has the ability to lock in moisture, so they provide some hydration to the lips which protects them from ageing.

Are lip fillers safe?

Dermal fillers are very safe and Dr. Mazzei is highly qualified. We only use brands approved by the regulating bodies of Australia.

The main ingredient in dermal fillers is a compound that occurs naturally in the skin, so allergic reactions are extremely rare.

We believe strongly in client education so our consultations are obligation-free.

We recommend you review the TGA’s list of considerations before undergoing procedures involving dermal fillers, and are happy to address any questions you have.

As with any medical procedure, Dr. Mazzei will discuss any potential risks and concerns prior to your treatment so you are confident and informed before making a decision.

How long does a dermal filler treatment take?

The procedure is relatively short. It takes about 30 minutes to cleanse the lips and carry out the injection.

Are they painful?

Dermal fillers have a fast-acting local anaesthetic mixed into the gel, and the actual injection time is very short, so any discomfort that may present is gone very quickly.

The injected area may be numb for about 20 minutes after the procedure, and it may become tender to the touch, but any tenderness should subside in just a few days.

Is there any downtime?

You should be able to return to your normal activities right away, however, swelling is common for 1-2 days after treatment, so you may want to consider this when choosing an appointment time. In some cases, there may be some mild bruising, but this can be concealed with mineral powder.

What aftercare is needed?

The injected fillers may move slightly over the first day, so post injection massage and moulding is necessary. This involves smoothing out the gel to ensure that it sits evenly.

Can lip/dermal fillers be used in conjunction with anti-wrinkle injections?

Yes, they are safe to use with anti-wrinkle injections, though they have a different purpose. Lip fillers add volume and plumpness while anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles that cause wrinkles, such as vertical lip lines and chin dimpling.

Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used with lip fillers to relax the upper lip and reduce a “gummy” smile.

If I change my mind, can lip fillers be removed?

Lip fillers are not permanent, and they will wear off as your body naturally metabolises them over time.

If you wish to have your dermal fillers dissolved sooner, there is an enzyme that is used to dissolve them which can be injected safely by an experienced doctor.

Can I have this treatment if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Unfortunately, we do not perform this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Although dermal fillers are generally regarded as safe, medical ethics preclude us as a responsible clinic from providing injectable treatments during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

We will be happy to welcome you into our clinic for dermal filler treatments after your pregnancy and breastfeeding period are complete.

Dr. Mazzei will discuss all the risks and benefits of treatments in further detail during your consultation.

Anti Wrinkle Injection FAQ's

How much do anti-wrinkle injections cost?

For anti-wrinkle injections, Dr Mazzei charges per unit used.

As each person is unique and individual needs may vary, we cannot give you an accurate estimate over the phone of how many units you may need. You’re welcome to come in for an obligation-free consultation with Dr Mazzei who can see you face to face, assess the strength of the muscle groups being treated, and provide you with their recommended number of units.

Larger muscle groups can require 20 units, while some smaller areas may only require 2-4 units. This is why we provide a consultation with someone who has excellent understanding of facial anatomy and charge by units used, which is fairer for all.

If you desire, you can be treated straight after your consultation.

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections are a series of very small injections, using a petite-sized needle, into some of the muscles that contribute to facial expressions.

The solution being injected temporarily relaxes the muscles so that they no longer crease and damage the skin with natural facial movements.

How do they work?

The product used in anti-wrinkle injections relaxes certain parts of the facial muscles by temporarily blocking the signal from the nerves to the muscle. This causes the muscle to relax, so the skin overtop looks smoother.

It also reduces some movement, which prevents the skin from creasing with natural facial movements, but when done properly, anti-wrinkle injections won’t leave you with a frozen look, you can still express yourself facially.

What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles are simply lines and creases in the skin. When we are young, our skin is strong and elastic, so “expression” lines disappear when we relax our facial muscles.

As we age, the collagen and elastin in our skin starts to deplete due to genes and lifestyle factors (such as lack of sleep, smoking or working in the sun). As we continually contract certain facial muscles, expression lines stay behind and form permanent creases.

Anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles that contract and cause wrinkles for a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Are wrinkle prevention injections safe?

Yes, they’re very safe providing they are authentic products delivered by an experienced professional in a suitable environment.

The active ingredient in anti-wrinkle injections is a protein that does not get absorbed into the blood system, but binds to other proteins within the nerve endings, so technically speaking, it is no longer present in the body an hour after it is injected.

Anti-wrinkle injections have been used by doctors for more than 30 years on millions of people worldwide, and they’re one of the most studied and researched medical procedures presenting no long-term side effects.

Our doctor also participate in regular, ongoing training to ensure the utmost attention to safety and excellent results.

What happens during the procedure?

First, Dr. Mazzei will consult with you to discuss your areas of concerns, how many units may be needed, provide necessary information and answer your questions.

Then, you will be asked to make some facial expressions to assess the best locations in the face for the injections. Then, anti-wrinkle product is carefully injected into the appropriate places using a very small needle.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

The initial consultation is a minimum of 30 minutes, plus further time 15-30 minutes if you decide to go ahead with treatment. Time will vary depending on procedure/areas being treated.

It’s easy to have a procedure during your lunch break or on your way home.

WHICH AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Anti-wrinkle injections have been proven effective in a number of areas, including:

  • Forehead lines and crows feet

  • Glabella (frown lines between the eyebrows)

  • Bunny lines (smile lines at the top of the nose)

  • Puckering lines around the lips

  • Above the lip to reduce a gummy smile

  • Lift sagging at the sides of the mouth

  • Improve chin creases and dimpling

  • Slim the lower face (masseter muscles)

  •

DO ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS HURT?

Most clients report no discomfort as the needle is very small and each injection is very short. Some people feel a very light sting that goes away as soon as the needle is out.

IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?

There is no downtime and recovery is immediate. There may be some very faint needle-prick marks that disappear very quickly. We offer a free post-treatment makeup touch-up if desired.

In some rarer cases, there may be slight bruising around the needle entry points, but this can be covered with makeup.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?

You’ll start to see results within a few days, but it takes 7-14 days for full results to appear. Although the anti-wrinkle product is gone within an hour or so (it binds with other proteins), it takes time for the targeted muscle to become relaxed.

The amount of time it takes to see full results may vary, depending on when your last treatment has worn off. We invite you back for a complimentary review 2 weeks after treatment to ensure you are happy with your results.

WILL THIS TREATMENT AFFECT MY MUSCLES AND NERVES IN THE LONG-TERM?

There is no direct effect at any time on the muscle. It is only the proteins within the nerve endings that are affected – but they start to rebuild immediately. It generally takes 3-4 months to build a new batch of nerve proteins to a point where the nerve regains its normal function. Muscles that are treated are those that create undesirable facial expressions and we are trying to weaken these. Indeed, overtime with continual use of wrinkle prevention injections, these muscles will become smaller. This is a desirable effect. It will eventually, over time, reduce the amount and frequency of treatments needed.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

Timelines may vary between people, but results normally last 4-6 months. With regular use over 2-3 years, results may last longer as the nerve-endings take longer to return to their normal state.

After 5 years of regular use, in areas where you previously created a lot of expression through involuntary use of facial muscles (such as forehead and frown lines), you may find that your muscle memory has reduced to a point where you no longer create those expressions and you no longer require injections. While this can happen with regular, long-term use, we cannot guarantee it as an outcome.

As your skin loses elasticity over the years, you may find that skin strengthening and tightening treatments are more important for maintenance.

WHEN SHOULD I BEGIN HAVING WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTIONS?

Ideally, you should consider anti-wrinkle injections in your late twenties or early thirties as a preventative measure before you develop permanent, deep lines on your face. This will help you maintain your youthful appearance. That being said, anti-wrinkle injections can also help reduce some wrinkles that have already appeared and prevent further signs of ageing. It is never too late to start.

CAN WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTIONS BE COMBINED WITH OTHER PROCEDURES?

Yes. They’re often used in combination with dermal fillers, especially where deep creases have already formed, to prolong their life in the skin and to get the best results.

You can also improve your results with skin rejuvenating, strengthening and tightening treatments by using them in combination with anti-wrinkle injections.

CAN I GET THIS TREATMENT IF I AM PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING?

Unfortunately, we do not perform this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Although anti-wrinkle injections are generally regarded as safe, medical ethics preclude us as a responsible clinic from providing injectable treatments during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

We will be happy to welcome you into our clinic for anti-wrinkle injections after your pregnancy and breastfeeding period are complete.
